The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just issued a press release about a recall of Regency Fireplace Products Gas Stove Fireplaces due to explosion and injury hazards. According to the CPSC, the models involved in this recall are the Regency Ultimate direct vent gas stove fireplaces (models U37 and U39). Apparently, the pressure release system can fail on these fireplaces and cause the gas stove to explode, which poses a serious risk of explosion and injury hazards. At this time, about 13,700 units are being impacted in this recall.

Details of The Defective Regency Fireplace Recall

The gas-stove fireplaces in question were originally sold at fireplace distributors and stores nationwide from January 2001 to January 2018 for about $2,800. The units currently under recall are the Regency Ultimate U37 and U39 direct vent gas stove fireplaces. They came in black and have gold or silver trim around the glass doors. “Regency” is printed on the front, bottom left corner of the pedestals of the stoves. If you think your gas stove might be under recall, check the CPSC’s press release to see the model numbers and serial number ranges of the faulty fireplaces.

Injuries Caused by Defective Regency Gas Stoves

At this time, Regency has received three repots of the pressure system failing on these gas-stove fireplaces. There has been one report of the door hinge breaking, and there has been at least one incident that resulted in lacerations to a consumer’s leg. If you have one of these gas stoves, you need to stop using it immediately. Turn off the gas supply to the unit, and contact Regency to schedule a free repair.

CPSC’s Fast Track Recall Process

Regency issued this recall voluntarily, under the CPSC’s Fast Track Recall process. This process was designed for manufacturers who are committed to swift announcements of potentially dangerous products. The idea is to get the announcement out about defective products as quickly as possible. This helps to protect consumers by getting defective and dangerous items removed or repaired as soon as possible.
