Injuries resulting from car accidents are usually very serious, and at times life threatening. Many people who are involved in crashes are not even aware of the extent of their injuries until after the fact. For this reason, it can be helpful to become familiar with some of the most common injuries that can affect people involved in bad car crashes.

Whiplash is probably the first injury that comes to mind for this circumstance. When impact occurs, it is possible that you could suffer temporary vocal paralysis, which is quite a common occurrence and is one of the more serious effects of a whiplash injury. Unfortunately, this isn’t the most serious injury that can affect you after you have been involved in a crash.

You should be especially wary if you are involved in a wreck and have a heart condition. The impact and shock have the potential to send you into sudden cardiac arrest, which is not exactly the same as a heart attack, and can be much more serious than a heart attack. Sudden cardiac arrest is classified as a medical emergency, which means that it has to be treated by medical professionals quickly to avoid what is known as sudden cardiac death.

Even though it may seem as though sudden cardiac arrest is the most serious worry for someone involved in a serious car wreck, head and back injuries can also be quite severe. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can affect either drivers or pedestrians, as the injury results from the brain being moved around in the skull at the point of impact. Unfortunately, there isn’t any real way to protect yourself from a TBI beyond protecting your head when you crash. While it may seem far-fetched, knowing that your head is one of your most vulnerable body parts during or leading up to an accident could save your life.

Spinal injuries should also be at the top of your mind, as these could have lasting effects for your physical abilities. The severity of spinal cord injuries differs, but unfortunately, medicine has yet to come up with a conclusive and effective repair method for these injuries. The best option when you have been affected by a severe spinal injury is to undergo rehabilitation treatment. This is medically assisted treatment to help you learn how to live and move once again after your injury. While it is difficult, it is the only semi-effective solution for spinal cord injuries at this time.

Spinal cord injuries, head injuries, and serious whiplash are some of the more serious injuries one can suffer during and after serious car crashes. In addition, however, emotional distress, and further muscular injuries can affect anyone, regardless of their physical condition. All these injuries must be catered for and borne in mind.
