Road crashes continue to wreak havoc on people’s lives, often causing devastating injuries and death. In fact, road crashes are one of the leading causes of accidental deaths in the U.S. Sadly, the loss of thousands of lives due to traffic fatalities is largely preventable.

In the California Driver Handbook, car crashes are not described as mere accidents, where no one is at fault or guilty of negligent driving. In most cases, one or two drivers are violating traffic laws, leading to dangerous collisions. A number of violations are identified as common causes of road crashes, but these are the top three:

  • distracted driving;
  • speeding; and
  • drunk driving.

It is easy to say that by avoiding these behaviors, many car crashes will be eliminated. However, there are some points that drivers should understand to help them embody a conscious effort to do away with risky driving behaviors.

On distracted driving. Distractions while driving come in many forms, but mobile phone use is the greatest contributor. With the introduction of multi-functional smartphones, plus the built-in communication features in new cars, driver distractions are on the rise. It is fundamental for drivers to understand that the distraction is both physical and mental. Therefore, “hands-free” gadgets don’t solve the problem.

On speeding. This driving issue has long been a main cause of crashes. Drivers need to know that posted speed limits are carefully analyzed based on a number of factors to ensure the optimum safety of all road users. The more drivers speed up, the less time they have to react. Adherence by every driver to speed limits is absolutely necessary to avoid speed-related car crashes.

On drunk driving. Like speeding, impaired driving has long contributed to more frequent and serious crashes. The normal physical and cognitive state of a person is impaired when drunk. This makes it far more likely that the driver will not recognize dangers and will react promptly to avoid a crash. The NHTSA reports approximately 10,000 deaths in 2012 alone.

Educating drivers about these destructive driving behaviors is a never ending task. It would be nice to think drivers will change their ways, but the truth is that people have always made mistakes, and always will. Constant reminders are needed to keep safety fresh in everyone’s mind.
