New details have emerged about the incident that took actor Anton Yelchin’s life. A recent New York Times article reported that the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in the crash was a model that Fiat Chrysler has recalled due to a dangerous gearshift issue. On Sunday, June 19, 2016, Yelchin was killed when his Jeep rolled down his driveway and crushed him against a concrete-reinforced mailbox. This particular Jeep is currently under recall for complaints due to a gearshift issue that has confused drivers, leading them to inadvertently leave the car in neutral, when they think it is safely in park.

Actor Anton Yelchin Crushed by Recalled Vehicle

The automaker was quick to release a statement on Monday, saying it was too early to determine what caused the wreck. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) made one point for certain. The Jeep rolled down his driveway and crushed him against the mailbox. Equally important to note, the Jeep involved was part of a recent recall by Fiat Chrysler for an issue involving a defective and unconventional gearshift. In April, nearly 812,000 vehicles, including 2014 and 2015 Grand Cherokees, were recalled due to drivers inadvertently leaving the vehicles in neutral rather than park.

Injuries Involving Faulty Gearshift on Jeep Grand Cherokees

Fiat Chrysler finally initiated the recall after numerous complaints and an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These vehicles have an unconventional and confusing gearshift. Instead of moving the gearshift to a different position with each gear, the lever returns to the middle position. At least 41 injuries have been reported in connection with the defective gearshift. Since the recall was announced, an additional eight complaints have been made. At this time, there still isn’t a permanent remedy for this dangerous issue. Additional vehicles involved in this recall are 2012-2014 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s. Consumer advocates are calling on Fiat Chrysler to provide loaner vehicles until the problem is solved.

Defective and Dangerous Auto Parts

At this time, it isn’t clear if Yelchin was even aware of the recall. Owners of these vehicles are urged to exercise additional caution and vigilance until this problem is remedied.
