A Sonoma State University student has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in connection with the death of 2-year-old Rohnert Park girl.
Kaitlyn Dunaway, 18, of Rohnert Park was allegedly distracted by her texting while she was driving struck and struck and killed Calli Murray as the girl across Snyder Drive holding her mothers hand last December 1 according to the Sonoma County prosecutor’s office.

Calli was killed, and her mother, Ling Murray, was seriously injured in the accident.

Dunaway has not been arrested; she was issued a citation letter to appear Thursday in Sonoma County Superior Court. If convicted, her maximum sentance would be one year in the Sonoma County jail.

Dunaway  is a freshman at Sonoma State University and graduate of Petaluma High School.

“This is a tragic case,” District Attorney Jill Ravitch said. “The Murrays will forever mourn the loss of their young daughter. Without regard to the facts or outcome of this case, it bears repeating that driving while texting is a dangerous and real threat to every member of our community. Do not text and drive. A few seconds of distraction can have devastating impacts.”
