A taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Monday after driving the wrong way on southbound Highway 1 and causing two other vehicles to collide when they tried to avoid him, according to CHP reports.

At around 6 p.m. Monday,  Steve Sharek, 57 years-old, of Santa Cruz  was arrested by CHP officers after he was spotted by a CHP plane  on Market Street in Santa Cruz, this according to CHP officer Sarah Jackson’s statement.

Sharek drove the cab up an off-ramp at State Park Drive in Aptos to southbound Highway 1 in the wrong direction, at around 1:50 p.m. Monday, the CHP said.

Sharek apparently realized his error and made a U-turn but not before a 57-year-old Aptos woman in a white, 1994 Toyota Avalon slammed on her brakes.

The Toyota Avalon was then struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban being driven by a 47-year-old Aptos woman was traveling directly behind her.

The Toyota was damaged, but the women had no significant injuries, officers said.

Officers initially had trouble finding the taxi, but they found Sharek and interviewed him about 6 p.m., Sgt. Peter Schaeffer said.

Sharek was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Jackson said
