A motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon after driving off a cliff in unincorporated Santa Clara County near Milpitas  a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The accident was reported at about 12:30 p.m. on Calaveras Road near Felter Road, CHP Officer Eric Anderson said.

For reasons yet unknown, the motorcyclist went off the roadway and died after falling 30 feet down a roadside cliff, Anderson said.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident.  No other information as to the identity of the rider was available according to Officer Anderson.

Calaveras Road was closed in both directions for several hours due to the accident, and there was no estimate for when the road would reopen, Anderson said.
