An 18-year-old male passenger died early Tuesday morning when the sport-utility vehicle he was riding in crashed into a light pole and burst into flames in a suspected DUI collision, according to San Jose police.
Police arrested the driver, Mitchell Braden Pennings, and booked him on charges of felony DUI, felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges. Pennings, also 18, tried to leave the scene, police said.
The men were in a 2001 Ford Explorer when it collided into a light pole and possibly a tree at the intersection of Almaden Expressway and O’Grady Drive in South San Jose, according to Sgt. Ronnie Lopez, a police spokesman.
